My name is Kimmy and I am a mod wannabe. I am trying to learn all I can about the Mod scene. Hope I dont sound like too much of a newbie. Not going to pretend to know anything about this cause I dont but I want to learn. Wow, my old teachers would have loved to have heard me say something like that about one of their classes.

Mods on Livejournal?

Posted on October 21, 2009 at 4:38 0 Comments

Does anyone know if there are any mod communities on Livejournal. I use Livejournal everyday and tried searching for one but the results that came up weren't exactly on topic.

How goes your Mod adventure???

It's a weird one really but, during the mid to late sixties, a lot of american soul records were imported into Britain that proved massively popular and were not the mainstream 'Mowtown' stuff either. Clubs like the Twisted Wheel in Manchester and the Wigan Casino held Northern Soul nights and so it all began. You can get a lot of Northern Soul 'compilation' albums at the moment if you wanted to check out these tunes.
British artists in the 60s like the Small Faces and The Who would produce very 'soulful' stuff and the Faces got a bit more pyschedelic in the 70's whilst the Who did travel down a heavy 'rock' road.
The Mod revival kicked-in in the 80's with the Jam, who were almost punk orientated and loads of Ska acts like the Beat, the Specials, Bad Manners and Madness. late 80's early 90's saw the last of the true Mod scene dissappear with bands like the Prisoners and the Solar flares, and the introduction of the indie scene with Oasis, Blur, Pulp, Suede and the Charlatans (who often quote their influences as the James Taylor Quartet).
You do find a lot of die hard, old school mods will always hold a torch for the Northern Soul stuff and tend to slate the Small Faces for some bizaare reason. Paul Weller will however always be held in the highest esteem it seems and if you ever get to see him live, you'll know why.
Check out www.modculture.com if you want an all singing, all dancing mod sight.
Sorry for whittering on but hope that helps.

No worries.
I hope you enjoy your mod experience! It's a good scene. Depends what you're in to really. Some people on here are real old school northern soulites, some are ska rude boys, some are real brit pop indie kids. Takes allsorts and is all good fun! If you want to check out some good sounds, you tube the Solarflares, The Prisoners and the James Taylor Quartet. Also, you can rarely go wrong with any old school Paul Weller and Ocean Colour Scene. Enjoy!!!
